One of the most important archaeological discovery since the Independence of Ukraine has been revealed in the Old City
On September 4, 2020 Acting Mayor Hryhorii Pustovit, Adviser to the Mayor Ihor Polishchuk, Rector of Lesia Ukrainka Volyn National University Anatolii Tsios, representatives of the Volyn Regional State Administration, State Historical and Cultural Reserve in Lutsk, State Enterprise “Research Center “Archaeological Service of Ukraine”, design and contracting organizations took part in an outdoor meeting during which cells under the Chartoryiski tower and the Jesuit monastery were inspected for the first time.
Unknown underground cells were discovered in May 2020 during restoration works on architectural monuments of national importance within the project "New life of the old city: revitalization of monuments of historical and cultural heritage of Lutsk and Lublin" under the Cross-border Cooperation Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2014–2020.
Three months ago, no one could even imagine that the cells under the Chartoryski tower and the Jesuit monastery existed. Securely hidden under a good layer of earth, they have kept their secrets to this day. And during the outdoor meeting the participants were able to descend and enter there for the first time.
During the excavations and clearing of these rooms unique things have been found. They include glassware, stone original handmade decorations, mirrored bricks dated back 1826. These are just few of the unique things that were found in the cells.
Acting Mayor Hryhorii Pustovit noted that they would become one more interesting tourist destination that would attract both Lutsk residents and guests of our city.
