Europe Day in Lutsk

Every year on the third Sunday of May Lutsk traditionally celebrates the Day of Europe. Together with schools and universities Lutsk City Council organises events, directed to the promoting the idea of European integration of Ukraine. This holiday acquired the particular meaning nowadays when our state officially declared the European integration course.

The celebration began with Euroolympiad - competition of knowledge about Europe and the European Union among pupils of Lutsk and partner cities of Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. This year Lutsk welcomed pupils from Rzeszów, Lublin, Toruń, Zamość, Chełm, Bartoszyce County (Republic of Poland), Kaunas (Lithuanian Republic) and Brest (Republic of Belarus).

For the participants of the Olympiad different tasks were prepared. All the pupils had an opportunity to show their competency level about the structure of the EU, its economy, finance and history.

In the afternoon Lesia Ukrainka Central Culture and Recreation Park turned into European City: it was full of national flags, colourful costumes and festive atmosphere. For the residents and guests of the city an interesting festive program was prepared – funny billboard with a face cut-out, interesting presentations from educational institutions and non-governmental organizations, contests, animation, entertainment, aqua makeup, etc. Lutsk citizens and guests confirmed once again that Ukrainian and European societies are closely related.

The traditional festival of school creativity “Eurovision 2017” was held within the celebration of the Europe Day, where the educational institutions of the city represented one of the EU member countries. Everyone enjoyed the performances of young Lutsk citizens and could learn more about the culture of European countries.

During the concert all the guests and citizens could visit the “European City” with such locations: foreign language corners for children and adults, children's drawings on the asphalt “My European City”, food zone “European Cuisine”, as well as participate in the excursion to Lutsk Zoo in English. In the evening everyone could enjoy the music during “Eurodisco”, where one could listen to European dance hits from the best DJs of Lutsk.

At the end of the Eurovision festival Secretary of Lutsk City Council Ihor Polishchuk and First Councillor of Consulate General of Poland in Lutsk Kszysztof Savicki addressed the residents and guests of the city with greetings, awarded the participants and winners of the “European Olympiad”, that had been held in the morning. Among the best were Polish pupils, in particular, Emir Chahed from Bartoszyce, who took the third place and Filip Hembitski from Chelm with the second place. And the winner of the Olympiad became Stanislav Dashchenko, the pupil of Lutsk school № 25.
