The Lutsk community participates in the project “Zero Waste Cities in Ukraine” supported by the LIFE Programme

On May 1, the “Zero Waste Cities in Ukraine” project was launched in Ukraine with the financial support of the European Union LIFE Programme, which aims to support local governments in meeting new legislative requirements in the field of waste management.

The project is developed and implemented by the Ukrainian Zero Waste Alliance under the coordination of the the Landscape Laboratory of Guimarães –Association for the Promotion of Sustainable Development (Portugal).

The project beneficiaries are four Ukrainian cities – Lutsk, Kherson, Pokrovsk (Donetsk Region) and Liubotyn (Kharkiv Region) – that will work with partners over the next four years to build a sustainable waste management system to achieve the status of Zero Waste City.

The European partners of Ukrainian cities in the project are the municipalities of Guimaraes (Portugal), Oeiras (Portugal), Carmignano (Italy), as well as the Hamburg Institute of Innovation, Climate Protection and Circular Economy (HiiCCE) (Germany), NGO “Zero Waste Europe” (Belgium) and NGO “Zero Waste Italy” (Italy). The network of European cities Euro cities and their pilot project “Sustainable Reconstruction of Ukrainian cities” contributed to the creation of the project consortium.

Ukrainian NGOs will support the on-ground implementation of the project activities. These NGOs include: CSO "Zero Waste Lutsk", CSO "Ecological News", CSO "Zero Waste Mariupol" and CSO "Zero Waste Kharkiv".

The representatives of Ukrainian cities, the project team and partners have the following tasks:

Assess the current state of the waste management system in four Ukrainian communities participating in the project;

Strengthen the institutional capacity of local governments of Ukrainian communities through comprehensive training;

Develop waste management strategies based on the principles of “Zero Waste” for four Ukrainian communities to ensure long-term planning;

Implement infrastructure pilot projects in four Ukrainian cities that will contribute to the development of a sustainable waste management system in communities. The projects can also be expanded and replicated by other Ukrainian cities and communities.

The project consortium combines the practical knowledge and experience of European municipalities, expertise from research institutions and public organizations in order to ensure that the project goals are achieved.

The project results will include: waste management strategies developed for four Ukrainian cities, institutionally capable communities to implement these strategies, launched pilot infrastructure projects, and established cooperation between Ukrainian and European cities involved in the project.
